ComScat

The main goal of this project is to develop a prototype of a multimodal diagnostic scanner combining existing inspection and imaging techniques with advanced X-ray based methods. The scanner will provide information on the fundamental failure cause in composites, Void distribution and morphology and potentially also on material composition, crystallinity, isotropy, texture, fibre content and orientation, strain mapping, delamination, micro cracks, porosity etc. The scanner will use a robotic system enabling scanning of large complexly shaped objects in constrained production settings. The primary application field is represented by high performance composite materials for space and aerospace represented by the products from SCSDK. The potential of the scanner will be evaluated for other fields as well (e.g. alloys, protective layers and paints, impregnation, moisture and corrosion visualization). Research on the new diagnostic methods is enabled by new spectral X-ray imaging chips developed by scientific collaboration Medipix in CERN and further developed and optimized for particular applications by ADVACAM.

The main project result will be a scanning apparatus fitted – as a test case – for the production line of SCSDK. The apparatus implements:

  1. A novel multispectral (colour) x-ray detector by ADVACAM.
  2. A flexible robotic setup build on the RADALYTICA’s mechanical and control platform.
  3. An analysis algorithm package by DTU sensitive to material parameters and production flaws.
